The Rule is Strict: Shoulders and Knees Covered.

You might see tourists in shorts around Rome, but the Vatican is different. It is an active religious site and the Swiss Guards are famously strict. If your knees or shoulders are visible, you will be denied entry to St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums.

Imagine waiting in line for 2 hours under the Roman sun, only to be turned away at the door. It happens every day.

The Solution: Dress Smart, Not Hot. Rome is hot in summer. You don't want to wear heavy jeans. Here is what we recommend packing to stay cool and respectful.

1. For Her: The "Emergency" Scarf Even if you wear a sleeveless top to survive the heat, you must have a cover-up for the church.

Our Tip: Carry a lightweight, non-wrinkle shawl in your bag. Throw it on before the security check, take it off when you leave.

2. For Him: Breathable Linen or Zip-Offs Men cannot wear hats inside, and shorts must cover the knees (no short running shorts).

Our Tip: Linen trousers are a lifesaver in July. They look elegant (Italian style) and let air through. Alternatively, hiking zip-off pants work well if you plan to walk a lot.

3. Don't Forget: A Refillable Water Bottle There are free water fountains ("Nasoni") all over the Vatican area. Don't pay 3€ for plastic bottles.
