What to Pack for the Vatican: The Ultimate Checklist (Don't Overpack!)

A day at the Vatican means miles of walking, strict security checks, and blazing sun. Here is exactly what you need in your bag to survive the day.

Visiting the Vatican isn't just a walk in the park. It's an expedition. You will be on your feet for 4-6 hours, passing through airport-style security, and navigating crowded museums. If you bring too much, you'll be miserable. If you bring too little, you'll be uncomfortable.

After helping hundreds of tourists, here is our "Perfect Vatican Backpack" list.

1. The Anti-Theft Backpack (Essential)

Pickpockets love the Bus 64 (which goes to the Vatican) and the crowded entrance lines. You need a bag that is secure but small enough to pass security regulations (large bags must be checked in the cloakroom, wasting time). We recommend a compact, slash-proof backpack with lockable zippers.

2. Filtered Water Bottle (Save Money)

Don't buy overpriced water from street vendors! Rome is full of "Nasoni" (free drinking fountains) with cold, delicious volcanic water. Bring a bottle with a built-in filter to ensure the taste is perfect, or a collapsible one to save space when empty.

3. Instant Stain Remover (Lunch Saver)

You will eat pizza or pasta for lunch. You will probably drop some tomato sauce on your white shirt. Don't let a stain ruin your photos in front of the Basilica. A "Tide to Go" pen takes zero space and saves the day.

4. A Portable Mini Fan (Summer Survival)

If you visit between June and September, the heat in St. Peter's Square is intense. There is no shade in the line. A small, battery-operated handheld fan can prevent heat exhaustion while you wait.

5. The "Just in Case" Power Bank

Taking photos and videos of the Sistine Chapel (shh, secretly!) and the Dome drains battery fast. You don't want your phone to die before you find your way back to the hotel.
