Rome is photogenic from every angle, but St. Peter's Dome ("Il Cupolone") is the undisputed star. If you want to capture photos that make your friends jealous (or go viral on Instagram), you need to know where to stand.

Here are the top 3 spots to capture the perfect shot of the Vatican, plus the gear you need to nail it.

1. Ponte Umberto I (The Classic Shot)

This is the spot. Go at sunset. From this bridge, you get the River Tiber in the foreground, the Ponte Sant'Angelo in the middle, and the Dome perfectly framed in the back.

Pro Tip: You need a steady hand or a support here, especially as the light fades. A lightweight travel tripod is essential for crisp sunset photos.

2. The Keyhole (Il Buco della Serratura)

Located on the Aventine Hill (Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta), this is a magic trick of perspective. You look through a tiny keyhole in a green door, and you see a garden tunnel that perfectly frames the Dome miles away.

The Challenge: It's tiny. Your phone camera might struggle to focus. A clip-on macro/telephoto lens kit for your smartphone can help you capture what your eye sees.

3. Castel Sant'Angelo Terrace

For a close-up from above, climb the Castle. The view directly down Via della Conciliazione toward the Basilica is majestic. If you are traveling solo or as a couple, getting both yourselves and the giant background in the frame is hard without a wide angle or an extension arm. Yes, selfie sticks are touristy, but they are the only way to get that shot.
